History of St.Peters Tamil Church

Magnum Theatre to St. Peters Tamil Church

History of our Church

A Brief Cinema Theatre transformed as a Church

The Cox Town Tamil church had a humble beginning. A small Christian gathering would assemble together in Rev. D.Jacob's house at No.11, Sunderamurthy Road, Cox Town, Bangalore - 5 every Sunday afternoon between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The Wesleyan Methodist

English people bought the Magnum Theatre building for the use of church worship in the year 1924, which was dedicated for the same on 15th Jan. 1926.

Rev. Paramanandam with the help of his missionary friends - Rev. Goodwill and Rev. Taylor facilitated in the purchase of Magnum Theatre building to be used for God's glory, which came to be known as "Wesley Methodist Tamil Church"

Rev. Pramanandam who was an energetic Pastor was also pastoring in Haines Road Wesley Church and helped in the other four namely -

· Ulsoor Wesley Tamil

· Shoolay Wesley Tamil

· Chamrajpet Wesley Tamil

· Cox Town Wesley Tamil

The superintending ministers were

- Rev Goodwill (1928-1932)-English Churches, East Parade and St. John's

Hill (on Promenade Road)

The Coxtown Church was part of the Haines Road Church in Bangalore Circuit under the administrative and supervisory control of Rev. Taylor.

Rev. J. William Joseph was the first Evangelist appointed by the Methodist Mission for Coxtown with Mr. Paul Rathnaswamy as the Leader (1926)

From 1947 onwards this Church came under CSI Mysore. In 1947 the Tamil circuit was affiliated to the Mysore Diocese and in 1950 the Cox Town Church was recognised as an independent  Pastorate and the first Pastor of the Pastorate was Rev. GD Paul. He was in charge of the ex- Methodist churches in Bangalore. viz. Haines Road, Cox Town, East Parade, ShooKai and Chamarajapet.

The New Church

Since the Church went through a lot of changes in its structure and was very weak, the Pastorate Committee and the Congregation decided to demolish the structure and raise a new Church building for the Lords glory. In 2010 the construction  started . In addition to the Church there is a community hall which is under construction and will be complete by January 2025
